History of Modern Linguistics
Course Description
This course surveys the
developments and broad directions in linguistics from the 19th
century to the present day. It describes the tenets of the major
schools of linguistics and their analytical approaches. The
intellectual atmosphere within which various ideas evolved, and
the prime architects of each school -- Saussure, Bloomfield,
Chomsky, among others -- are also discussed.
