IEL4115: Trends in Language Evaluation

Course Description

This course will provide an overview of the trends in English Language evaluation related to teaching and learning, and examine the principles, purpose and implications of evaluation. It will also explore the range of quantitative and qualitative methods for evaluating language learning (for e.g., diagnostic tests; formative and summative assessment; placement tests; norm-referenced and criterion-referenced assessment). Issues of validity and reliability of assessment, and ‘subjective’ and 'objective' assessment will be looked into. Current research in language evaluation will also be covered.
