Course Description

This course looks closely at the importance of language for learning. We will consider the role that language plays in subjects across the curriculum; the nature of the language used in different subjects; the relationship between language and learning; the relationship between language and thinking; the role of cognitive, affective and social factors in learning and language learning; and at how teachers, by developing their knowledge about and awareness and understanding of language, language use and language needs, and by developing practical skills and strategies, can better facilitate their students' language development, and thus foster greater confidence and success in the different curriculum areas. The course will thus bring together theory and practice, and will consider spoken and written language, and the relationships between verbal and visual language.
