Course Description

This course will provide participants with the opportunities to discuss and acquire knowledge on the following components: Intra-lingual variation, Inter-lingual variation, Standard English, Standardization processes, Status of English, Implications of linguistic variation for teaching and learning English in the school curriculum, The language situation in Singapore, Language Attitudes, the Relation between social variation and social attitudes, Language, culture and identity, Language Planning, Language maintenance and language shift, the role of English in relation to the mother tongue languages in Singapore as well as that between Standard English and Singlish.
