IEL2012: Teaching Asian & Commonwealth Literature

Course Description

Participants of this course will be introduced to the following components:

  • Singapore literature: a selection of Singapore poetry from writers such as Boey Kim Cheng, Alfian Sa’at and Lee Tzu Pheng

  • African literature: J.M Coetzee’s Waiting for the Barbarians - concerns of theme and form: cross-cultural communication, representations and construction of “difference”, ethics in Literature and the uses of allegory

  • Indian literature: Anita Desai’s Fasting Feasting - concerns of theme and form: gender politics, transnational identities, the representation of the family

  • Indian literature: a selection of Indian poetry from writers such as Nissim Ezekiel, A. K. Ramanujan, Eunice de Souza, and Arun Kolatkar

  • Caribbean literature: Derek Walcott’s “Pantomime” (a play)

  • Post-colonial short stories: a selection of stories from writers such as Edwidge Danticat, Jhumpa Lahiri, Pauline Melville, Jean Rhys, Nick Joaquin, Margaret Atwood and Henry Lawson
