MASTERS OF ARTS IN APPLIED LINGUISTICS: THE EVENING PROGRAMME

Note: The information contained here is meant mostly for participants doing the regular MA
           programme (ie., for PDCM Evening and non-PDCM) where classes are conducted in the
           evenings from 6 – 9pm.

The programme has three strands:

  • Language Education Research
    The focus of this strand is on language
    education with a strong research orientation.
     
  • Language Studies
    The focus of this strand is on linguistic
    theory and its implications for language
    education.
     
  • Classroom Applications
    Courses in this strand address classroom
    practice and issues directly related to
    language teaching and assessment.

Completion Routes

In order to graduate, participants can choose one of two completion routes.

1. The MA by Coursework Entirely Route

    Participants who choose to take the MA by coursework entirely route have to complete
    nine courses in total plus MMM800 Critical Inquiry, as specified below:

  • The Core Course MAE800 Research Methodology in Applied Linguistics.
     
  • At least two Required Specialisation Courses: either MAE801 or MAE804, and either MAE802 or MAE803.
     
  • At least one and not more than three of the Language Education Research Electives.
     
  • At least one and not more than three of the Language Studies Electives.
     
  • At least one and not more than two of the Classroom Applications Electives.
     
  • An optional elective from any NIE programme outside the MA in Applied Linguistics programme, if participants choose to do so.
     
  • The independent study course MMM800 Critical Inquiry.
  • 2. The MA by Coursework with Dissertation Route

        Participants who choose to take the MA by coursework with dissertation route have to
        complete eight courses in total plus the dissertation, as specified below:

  • The Core Course MAE800 Research Methodology in Applied Linguistics.
     
  • At least two Required Specialisation Courses: either MAE801 or MAE804, and either MAE802 or MAE803.
     
  • At least one and not more than three of the Language Education Research Electives.
     
  • At least one and not more than three of the Language Studies Electives.
     
  • At least one and not more than two of the Classroom Applications Electives.
     
  • The dissertation.

    Rate of Completion

    Participants may vary their rate of completion, depending on their preference.

    1. The Part-time Programme

        For the part-time programme, the minimum and maximum number of years allowed for
        completion are 2 and 4 years respectively.

    2. The Accelerated Programme

        For the accelerated programme, the minimum and maximum number of years allowed for
        completion are 1 and 2 years respectively.

     

    Accreditation

    Participants who have been granted accreditation of selected courses in the MA in Applied Linguistics programme may seek approval for a different completion route. The personalised schedule must be planned in consultation with the MA Programme Coordinator.
